the motylinski circus
Last night we went to the caucus’ (is that how you spell it?) or caucuses, or caucusing if you will. We were a chaotic group to say the least. All bundled up, we maneuvered our stroller into an elementary school classroom not set up for strollers. We created a ruckus at the door when i crashed into several desks and then within seconds of receiving his ballot, Jason had lost it. I bent down to get Riley’s coat off and he started screaming, I put my purse down to pick him up and his musical keys started playing music. Riley will only stay calm when Jason is holding him tonight, so insists on it. Only, Jason is frantically searching for his misplaced ballot and can’t really manage a 30 pound child while searching his pockets. Did I mention this was all going on at the front of the room where i had so wisely chosen to sit so I didn’t have to push the stroller through the hazardous sea of miniture 1st grad desks. Soon we have a pile of coats, purses, diaper bags, baby toys, etc. and Riley continues to let us know he wants to go home. At one point the chair person even stops talking to give us some time to calm Riley down before she continues. One other mother in the room with a new born baby gives me that sympathetic knowing smile. “its ok, we have all been there” the chairperson says. Only it occurs to me that I am not embarrassed. This is nothing compared to the hell that Riley used to put us through in check out lines at the store. Jason makes the wise decision to cast our votes and leave. (not before i once again set off the musical keys in search of a pen at the bottom of my purse) We gather our belongings and have a brief argument over who is going to carry what and head to the exit, once again slamming into the closely placed desks the entire way out. People are trying to come in to the room at this time so i can’t get out. I wait patiently. Some guy must have been less patient then I because he literally walked over and picked up a desk so we could get out. And with that, the Motylinski’s exit stage left.
